Although the scorecard suggests a great birdie opportunity, the best short par fours have a habit of offering up birdies but taking away bogeys, and such is the case on the narrow 17^th hole at Mornington Golf Club.

Being too greedy from the tee is a recipe for disaster here, as the fairway is harder to hit and hold the further you drive your ball. Trees down both sides are almost certain to block your approach if you miss the short grass.

Playing safe and leaving a short iron approach into this tricky green site is usually the smarter option. Even then, the front of the green is very steep, and only ten paces wide, so more often than not the easier pin positions are up the back of the green. Avoiding the sole bunker on the left, and the deep chipping swale on the right are essential if you hope to make a birdie, as is judging the wind and the deceptive elevation change.
